Fishing Damsel Flies during Summer

From the beginning of June until the end of August the damsel fly plays it's greatest role in the fly fishing year! During this period mature nymphs will hatch in profusion and while the adult fly is taken by trout, the nymph is of greatest interest.

At this time nymphs are large, between one and two inches in length. The migration of the nymph to the bankside vegetation where it will hatch out into the adult damsel fly, sees numbers of trout cruising the margins in eager anticipation.

Look for weedbeds close to a shoreline of reeds. This is prime damsel habitat now and the trout know it! The nymphs will be anything from dark olive, through brown to almost sooty black. Fishing a tadpole and other mobile damsel patterns in these colours around weedbeds will both catch you numbers of fish and some bigger specimens too.
