January Fly Fishing Report

I've been guiding and running fishing courses at our three regular winter venues during the last month, finding successful tactics to be much the same in each case.

Loynton Hall, Willington Lake and Marton Heath trout fisheries have all responded consistently to two distinct approaches. Starting the day on intermediate lines with lures or nymphs, then switching to a floating line and long leader during the warmest parts of the day (not that many days could be described as warm at any point)and using buzzers and/or small nymphs.

Even on the coldest days most clients have caught fish, even on the beginners days!

Our winter fly fishing courses will be running until the end of February. So if you want to learn how to catch winter rainbow trout and master nymph fishing tactics book your trips now!

Flies for winter fishing

Some interesting fishing trips recently made me think about fly selection for winter. Their seems to be two distinct moods for feeding trout during the colder months of the year.

On one day the trout will be more inclined to go for a larger fly with plenty of movement, such as a tadpole lure. The next a small slim pattern like a buzzer will be needed to induce fish to bite!

Tackle also needs to be taken into consideration. If small nymphs prove the key to catching fish on the day then lighter leaders, fly lines and rods are needed. This fact is never more apparent than when fishing in clear water. When rainbows target small midge pupa, presenting your artificial with the seven weight outfit used for larger flies will spook a lot of fish. Scale things back to a five weight and not only will you spook less trout, your fly will appear more lifelike in the water.

Remeber, the key to a good day is to identify the mood of the fish early on and watch for changes throughout the day!

If you would like to learn more about winter fly fishing techniques Midlands Flyfishing are running one day courses until the end of February.

Happy New Year to everyone!

Since my last post temperatures have thankfully risen sharply and the fishing since the ice went has been good at all our venues. Unfortunately the latest forcast shows another cold front coming in, so if heavy frosts hit overnight I suggest your ring before visiting local waters. I have just uploaded a major update for our fishing guide service. The update gives you full details on our specialist guided fishing trips. Check it out and let me have your comments!
