Angling Survey

The Environment Agency is funding a new regional study on freshwater fishing in England and Wales. The aim of the study is to obtain regional information on the economic contribution of angling, which can be used to help influence future devlopment of fisheries.

The survey takes 5 minutes to complete, which is no time at all and will aid future fishing projects, so it has to be worth doing! To file your submission go to angler survey.

Midlands Fly Fishing Report - April

Well spring finally arrived this month, the rising temperature bringing spectacular hatches of buzzers at some of our venues.

Large buzzer hatches have been a feature of sport at Willington Lake Trout Fishery, where we have experienced great sport fishing small emergers in the surface film. Large numbers of brown trout are being caught and the fish are in immaculate condition. The rainbows are starting to move up in the water too, with grown on fish to 6lbs landed on midge pupa patterns.

Marton Heath is fishing well with good catches of rainbows averaging 1.5lb. Although many anglers are catching on lures in the current coloured water conditions, good surface sport is to be had to hatches of buzzer.

The same can be said at Carsington, Dane Bridge and Loynton fisheries, where fishing lures or a team of nymphs has been the main tactic. As always with Carsington two outfits are usefull, one with a sinking line and damsel, the other rigged with a floater and buzzer combination. Some nice browns continue to come out, but personally I would head for Willington as the brown trout fishing is amazing at the moment.

Loynton continues to produce doubles plus the odd twenty pounder mainly to lures ( black and green or white and green combinations are a good starting point) and midge pupa drifted around features.

Some fine dry fly fishing is due as olives are just starting to hatch on most waters, Willington and Marton are noted dry fly venues and both have very big hatches.

See you on the water!

Latest news from the Willington fishery

Fishing at the Willington Lake Trout Fishery was fantastic during the Easter break! Warm and mainly dry conditions saw the trout rising on mass to the huge hatches of buzzer.

Although we have had a couple of wet days since, the fishing is good and given drier weather towards the weekend sport could well be fantastic.

I have enjoyed good sport with both browns and rainbows as have clients, the best fish an immaculate brown trout of 3.5lbs. This venue is in the sort of form now that you really don't want to miss, providing the ultimate immitative fishing.

See you on the water!

Great Start to the Brown Trout Fishing Season

Despite our very mixed weather since the start of the brown trout season on April 1st we have experienced some great sport with fish to 3.5lbs.

At Willington, catches made by myself and clients have seen more browns than rainbows landed, and what wonderfully marked trout they are! Most have fallen to dark damsel nymph immitations, but during sunny spells buzzer hatches in sheltered bays have seen the browns avidly surface feeding.

Now the algal bloom from a couple of weeks ago has cleared, seeing a margin cruising brown lift through several feet of water to take your fly really tests the nerves. Stalking is the way to take these fish, so if you want to learn how to get the most from this exciting form of fly fishing why not book a day's tuition? For more information visit our stalking trout page.

At Carsington Water brownies are coming consistently to sunk line tactics, with small lures in black and white or damsel nymphs. Don't rush for the boats at this time of year as our experience points to consistent fly fishing from the bank. Boats will come into their own later when the weather warms up!

If you want to target browns these two waters are the place to go now. Our guided fishing and tuition will maximise your chances of not only hooking into a good brown trout, but also having the knowledge to catch them on a regular basis.
