June Fishing Reports

As I write this report, I cannot believe we are almost half way through the year! Latest reports for all our trout fishing venues below: -

Carsington Water: - Some great catches have been made during the month despite the hot bright conditions. Fishing during the day has centered mainly on fast sinking lines to reach the fish. On hard days try using very mobile lures, if the trout follow or nip at the lure switch to a smaller size or add nymphs to the cast. Flies with a touch of red are working well.

Willington Lake Trout Fishery: - Fishing has been excellent with good sized grown on browns and rainbows to 5lbs being landed. Don't be put off by the profuse weed growth, I always look at it as an opportunity not a problem. The weed is the key to the rich feeding for trout and has kept the trout looking up for food on even bright days. Don't be afraid to fish over and round the weed with dries and nymphs, use 6lb point minimum and hold the fish high in the water.

Lechlade: - Both Lechlade and bushyleaze are in good form, the latter providing superb dry fly action. Lechlade is producing the usual crop of large trout, including several double figure brown trout. On the river, the wild brownies are coming to both dry fly and nymph, a plesant distraction from big fish stalking.

Marton Heath Trout Fishery: - Fantastic dry fly fishing, the mayfly hatch was heavy this year. Buzzer and lake olives will keep this going along with damsels and sedge. During ht days this water does suffer and fishing later in the day is best.

Dane bridge Trout Fishery: - Another water fishing well to surface tactics as well as nymphs. Some good fish have been caught and sport will remain good through the summer in the airated water.

Loynton Trout Fishery: - Double figure rainbow trout keeping coming from this venue along with good catches of smaller fish. Surface sport plus damsels and buzzers will catch most days but ver hot bright conditions can mean getting down in the water with lures to be successful.

Fishing Damsel Flies during Summer

From the beginning of June until the end of August the damsel fly plays it's greatest role in the fly fishing year! During this period mature nymphs will hatch in profusion and while the adult fly is taken by trout, the nymph is of greatest interest.

At this time nymphs are large, between one and two inches in length. The migration of the nymph to the bankside vegetation where it will hatch out into the adult damsel fly, sees numbers of trout cruising the margins in eager anticipation.

Look for weedbeds close to a shoreline of reeds. This is prime damsel habitat now and the trout know it! The nymphs will be anything from dark olive, through brown to almost sooty black. Fishing a tadpole and other mobile damsel patterns in these colours around weedbeds will both catch you numbers of fish and some bigger specimens too.
