UK Fly Fishing Seasons

Recently I've received several enquiries from anglers in England and abroad, requesting information on the fishing season for various species in the UK. So to help everyone out, here's a general guide!

The river season for trout is March to October. Their are variatons on this and many waters such as chalkstreams the season runs April to September. On rivers with good stocks of grayling, fly fishing is often allowed through the winter.

Our stillwater fisheries provide a wealth of fly fishing for rainbow trout year round, though some waters (usually the reservoirs) do close for part of the winter. The brown trout season is as for the rivers due to legislation.

Coarse fishing is also year round now with the exception of rivers where the season runs June 16th to March 15th. However if you fancy fly fishing for carp the best time is undoubtedly May to October, when carp are most active. On the subject of carp fly fishing, look out here in the coming months for more information.

This is a general guide and you should confirm with individual fisheries what season they operate before going fishing. With a few calls however, you will find a convenient water to fish anytime of the year. Handy if like me you get the shakes after a few days of being off the water!

So now you all know the seasons, their is no excuse to put those rods away for winter!

Mid October Report

Water temperatures are down and levels have comeback up on our smaller waters as the springs kick back in again. The fishing is excellent currently with some fantastic rainbows being landed.

Fry feeding is beginning on several lakes, with some very agressive attacks visible close to the surface. Despite this we are taking more fish on small nymph patterns, especially midge pupa.

The brown trout are also becoming very agressive as they start to think about spawning. We have taken some wonderfully conditioned fish during the last two weeks, some on lures others on nymphs, plus more than a few with small dries.

We currently have dates available for the remainder of October if you dream of a big brown trout after which time the season will be closed until April. Fishing for the rainbows will continue througho the year, with plenty of big fish about I know it will be a great winter's fishing!

Fly Fishing Report September / Early October

The very mild September maintained evening sport on all waters, with good hatches of Sedge and midges. As I write in early October the rise is tailing off quickly, with much smaller numbers of fish rising to localised hatches during settled conditions.

Fishing is picking up fast on our stillwaters, with good fishing at Loynton, Lechlade, Bushyleaze, Marton Heath and Danebridge during the past two weeks. Willington is providing some fine fish, but sport is localised and you have to keep on the move, working hard to locate feeding fish.

Sight fishing at Lechlade and Willington is now improving as water clarity has returned. We are taking grown on fish to 7lbs at Willington, with good doubles moving at Lechlade and Loynton. Fancy targeting some big fish? Call 01782 394564 to arrange a trip!

Carsington is also producing some good bags, with individual fish to over 3lbs. The season on this water ends Saturday 07th October. It will re-open late March 2007, we will anounce the date here once we know exactly when.

Chalkstream fishing for wild browns closed on September 30th. The new season will start Apil 1st 2007 and we are taking bookings for the new season now. May fly hatches where huge this year and we are sure to get booked up fast for the 2007 season. Go to our chalkstream fishing page for further details.

The remainder of October will see prolific fry feeding start at Loynton and Lechlade in particular and I am looking forward to us putting some doubles on the bank. By the turn of the year I'm sure I will be dreaming of balmy late spring days and the delights of small dry fly fishing, but for now bring on the big boys!

Health Benefits of Fly Fishing

Ofcourse we have been saying how relaxing fly fishing is for years. Now however, research from the University of Pennsylvania suggests it's the sight of fish swimming around that relaxes you and lowers blood pressure.

Another great reason to go fly fishing in clear water! Now is an ideal time of year to start fly fishing, cooler temperatures trigger some really good fishing on our stillwaters.
