Why Rivers Win My Vote In Summer

Not only does fly fishing pristine rivers take you to the very heart of fly fishing, at this time of year they offer the best sport! While stillwater trout languish in a soup of food, bellies full, river fish have to keep working the currents picking off a variety of prey washed down to them.

It is a total falacy that August fly fsihng is just too hard for the river angler, you just need to scale everything back. Flies whether nymph or dry should be small, 16-20 or even smaller, with light tippets and outfits 3-4 weight. Do this and you find the river alive with fish willing to take your fly.

Having said that, my client yesterday Roy Nichols landed 2 wild browns between 1.5-2lbs using a size 12 czech nymph! However, conditions were more like early April so we fished accordingly. Just goes to show, the rule is their are no rules!
