Fishing Report 9th-17th April 2007

Right now we are pretty much where I left off in the last report. The weather has been amazing, my freckles are starting to join up forming my very own tan and the fly fishing is great!

I've been busy with fly fishing tuition most days at Loynton and Watermark, both of which fished very well. Floating lines with buzzers, scruffy damsel, leech and PTNs picked up fish for everyone, the best a 6.5lb rainbow in mint condition for Mark Coupe during a weekend break!

Remaining days were taken up guiding on the river Coln, where clients landed caught an average of 14 wild brown trout per day. Fish have been loath to take dries so far despite increasing hatches of midge and large dark olives, prefering to munch shrimp and olive nymphs. A few trout were caught on F fly and parachute adams, but most have been taken on HE shrimp and PTN.

Good sport has also been had at Bushyleaze, Willington and Carsington fisheries, where buzzers and floating line tactics have accounted for many fish in the fine weather. The same tactics have caught well at Marton Heath, Danebridge and Cound.

On the big fish scene Lechlade and Loynton are producing good numbers of doubles, though stalking at Lechlade is made rather difficult by the heavy algal bloom currently present. It is a case of either waiting for a big fish to show high in the water and right by the bank or fish the hot spots blind.

Big Trout Bonanza!

We are seeing an amazing number of double figure rainbow trout caught at our "big fish" waters currently. Check out the latest capture at our Midlands Fly Fishing Guides home page!

Gary was over from the USA, taking the opportunity to go sight fishing for some trophy trout. This particular fish finally took at dusk, providing Gary with a spectacular fight prior to landing. It weighed in at 14lbs exactly and is Gary's biggest rainbow trout!

November 2006 FlyFishing Report

Another month ends and November has certainly provided anglers with some fine stillwater fly fishing!

Loynton Trout Fishery in Staffordshire has fished spectacularly, with big rainbow trout to 24lb 15oz landed. Not only that but catches of up to 14 rainbows in one session have been recorded, including many double figure fish. Lures and small nymphs have caught the majority of fish. If you are struggling, stay on the move and keep altering tactics to intercept the fish.

Likewise, Lechlade, Bushyleaze, Danebridge and Marton Heath fisheries are all providing excellent sport. We are now into the winter fishing, seeing more movement around midday so make make sure you are on the water at this time. Lechlade in particular seems to be fishing better in the afternoon, producing some really cracking rainbows to around 20lbs. I have to say though there are some wounderfully marked brownies cruising the lake currently that make me long for spring!

Willington is coming off a slow period, with more fish moving higher in the water. Fishing is best in the morning currently with trout responding to mobile patterns such as small damsel nymphs, bloodworm and leech patterns. Around midday try switching to midge pupa as their are often small hatches coming off in sheltered bays.

Make sure you get out on the water, the fish are very much out there as you can see from this report, winter is the time to be fly fishing stillwaters!

See you on the water!
