Fishing Report June 2013

The smile says it all! First fish on fly.

The smile says it all! First fish on fly.

June fly fishing was dominated this year by a late Mayfly hatch that produced wonderful sport on the rivers and lakes alike. Many clients took their first day fly fishing at this prolific time and enjoyed some great opportunities. Others furthered skills or treated themselves to a guided fishing trip.

I nearly fulfilled my ambition to land a double figure trout on dry fly, when a large rainbow ate my dry while demonstrating the technique to a group. Unfortunately that fish came adrift, however it certainly gave everyone a good display.

Mayfly also produced on the rivers, with not one but two very large river browns (I estimate both were 6lbs+) hooked by  very startled clients. Both broke off unfortunately. If you fancy chasing these fish, September/October would be a great time. Find out more here.

Traditionally July/August are thought of as the “dog days” as feeding activity drops during the main part of the day. In reality quality fishing is available if you are willing to be waterside at the right times. Early and late in the day are always going to be best. For this reason we offer clients the opportunity to fish full days from lunchtime to dark and offer four hour sessions for evening fishing. Contact us and find out how to make the most of your high summer fly fishing!
