Fishing Report October 2010

October’s fly fishing has been awesome in so many ways, it’s difficult knowing where to start! It is said a picture says a thousand words, so lets start with this.

Autumn by the water

With the river trout season over, trips have been focused on stillwater lessons, plus a few early season grayling trips. Tom and I have also been test fishing pike waters, locating some predators for November trips, plus hooking more than 1 angler up with huge browns. Unfortunately, those big browns won on each occasion. Snapped leaders were the net result of close quarter fights with 3 different browns between 11 & 15lbs. In each case it was hit and hold to prevent fish getting into snags and anglers luck did not hold out!

With lakes really coming into their own now, clients have been catching plenty of fine rainbows. Mild conditions have seen fabulous nymph and dry fly sport, with sporadic explosions of fry feeding. It’s a fantastic time to experiement and allows us to show you all a wide array of techniques with full expectation of catching trout.

Clients have also been enjoying some fabulous nymph and dry fly action with grayling. Good midge, olive and caddis hatches have regularly brought fish to the surface around lunchtime. A mixture of Steve’s PP midge, parachute Adams, klinkhammers and G&H sedge have been top performers for us.

Novembers’s Forward View

Lake fly fishing will explode as rainbows drive fry in all directions, providing amazingly exciting fly fishing. This fishing is often very exacting, being in the right place, with the right fly at the right time is everything. We have been conducting a 3 study of fry feeding habits which will be ongoing. However we now have sufficient information to seriously boost your fly fishing knowledge and your catches. Another reason to book a fly fishing lesson with MFF.

November is a prime month for grayling fishing. The first frosts have put an edge on the graylings appetite, while water conditions remain clear, providing superb sight fishing. Days often have a reasonable fly hatch with good nymph fishing before and after so keep those fly rods set up for some exciting action.

Our season at our exclusive pike destination kicks off this month. An unfished (by anyone else that is) venue where we have our own boat kitted out ready to go, taking you in hot pursuit of big pike on the fly!

Hope to here from you real soon!
