Start Fly Fishing - Fly Selection

One of the most frequently asked questions I hear when coaching novice fly fishers is "what fly do I use? Their are so many". My reply is what I say to you now, their are indeed hundreds of thousands of fly patterns available, but you can catch all year round with around twelve.

So what are these magic twelve flies? Here's my list: -

  1. Damsel nymph size 8-10
  2. Midge pupa in black, olive, gray size 12-16
  3. Pheasant tail nymph size 8-18
  4. Hares ear nymph size 12-16
  5. Tadpole in black, white, orange and olive size 8
  6. Zonker size 8
  7. Parachute adams size 10-18
  8. F fly in black, olive, gray size 14-18
  9. Shuttlecock buzzer in black, olive, red, orange size 14-16
  10. Hopper in black, brown, olive, orange size 10
  11. Adult damsel fly in olive and blue size 8
  12. Elk hair caddis size 10-16

The above fly selection will cover ninety percent of days for the novice fly fisher, meaning you spend more time fishing a fly than scratching your head while looking blankly at a huge selection of flies. You will find the above flies or variants of plus more specialized fly patterns available in our fly shop.

If your still struggling to catch, maybe you should book some fly fishing tuition to make sure you are using them correctly!
