Sight Fishing, Stalking Trout!Possibly the most skillful way to catch trout is sight fishing. Certainly it's the most interesting, exciting approach. Also referred to as stalking or polaroiding depending upon where you are in the world. The aim is to visually spot a trout, study it's movements, then present a fly in a manner most likely to induce a take.
Fly fishing a lake in this way is rare and rather special. Most lakes do not have sufficiently clear water to polaroid. You will be sighting and fishing to rainbow and brown trout, of a large average size, with the option of targeting big trophy trout weighing 10-25lbs. These larger than average fish feed predominantly subsurface. Our approach to these trout once located is to fish weighted nymphs, with dry flies and lures used when big fish rise or slash into fry shoals. This style of fly fishing lakes is practiced widely in countries such as New Zealand and Tasmania, where stalking trout is often responsible for capturing the best specimens. So in addition to being an exciting fly fishing trip in it's own right, you can use it as excellent preparation for adventures to other countries. Here's what one client thought of his experience: - "Hi Steve, I want to thank you for a great day! I enjoyed catching some great fish, learning far more than I ever could from books or fishing myself. Andrew Poulton, Leicestershire."
